C=COMMON, easily seen in proper habitat
FC = FAIRLY COMMON, usually seen in proper habitat
U=UNCOMMON, difficult to find or occurs in low numbers  in proper habitat
R=RARE, extremely local or very low numbers per season in proper habitat
VR=VERY RARE OR CASUAL, regular pattern of occurrence, but may not be present every year
M=MONTANE, occurs mainly above 4,500 ft. elevation
S=SPORADIC, irregular; may be numerous one year and absent the next
P=PELAGIC, occur on open ocean, or near Channel Islands, sometimes seen from shore
C=COASTAL, occur mainly in nearshore waters, on beaches, in bays, estuaries, lagoons, harbors and/or beaches
